Another long weekend is here and every long weekend the Nova Scotia RCMP reminds the public to drive safely and be careful on the roads. There continues to be fatal and serious injury crashes due to distracted driving which indicates the public is not getting the message.

In the past five years, distracted driving has been the number one reason people are killed on our roadways, followed closely by impaired driving, speeding, aggressive driving, and people not wearing seat belts.

When you get behind the wheel of a car, the person responsible for your safety, and the safety of your passengers, is you. Crashes are not accidents and they are preventable. Keep your eyes on the road and away from the cell phone in your hand or on your lap.

‘You don’t want to be the one involved in a collision this long weekend. No one thinks it’s going to be them.’ says Cst. Sherri Curley, RCMP Provincial Traffic Services. Taking your eyes off the road for only a few seconds is long enough to cause a serious or fatal crash.’

The phone call you are making may seem important or checking a text may seem urgent but it’s not worth someone’s life, including your own.

Please pay attention on the roads. Avoid tragic and preventable crashes while you’re traveling this weekend.
