Officer seriously assaulted during arrest

Eskasoni RCMP Detachment has charged a man who assaulted two officers following an incident on Spencers Lane in Eskasoni.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 9:03 a.m. Eskasoni RCMP Detachment responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in Eskasoni. Officers learned that a man attended the home, which was in breach of his previous release conditions, and had a verbal altercation with a man and a woman before fleeing the scene. The man was known to both occupants.

RCMP officers quickly located the man at a residence on Mountain Rd.

In an attempt to arrest the man, both RCMP officers were assaulted; one of which suffered serious injuries. Moments after the struggle, the man was safely arrested when additional RCMP officers arrived on scene. No weapons were used in the assault.

Gerard Toney, 29, from Eskasoni, was charged with:

•           Aggravated Assault of Peace Officer;
•           Assault a Peace Officer;
•           Resisting a Peace Officer;
•           Uttering Threats (two counts);
•           Being Unlawfully in a Dwelling-House;
•           Failure to Comply with Release Conditions (six counts);
•           Failure to Comply with Probation Order (two counts).

Toney was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appeared in Eskasoni Provincial Court on January 29, at 9:30 a.m.
