One Book Nova Scotia Announces 2016 Author and Book Tour

NOTE: A schedule of author readings appears at the end of this news release.

The province’s biggest book club, One Book Nova Scotia, is encouraging all Nova Scotians to read Donna Morrissey’s The Deception of Livvy Higgs this fall.

The book is centered around an 80-year-old Halifax woman, whose physical frailty and near-isolation raise memories of a past marked by secrets. Her mind wanders to the French Shore of Newfoundland during the mid-1930s and to Halifax during World War II, weaving in and out of her current life and reluctant reliance on a neighbour.

Ms. Morrissey lives in Halifax and is the award-winning author of five adult novels as well as the Gemini Award-winning screenplay Clothesline Patch. Her book Sylvanus Now was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize.

“We are extending an invitation to every Nova Scotian to participate in a provincial reading initiative focused on literacy, community, and shared story-telling,” said Maggie Neilson, One Book Nova Scotia co-chair. “One Book Nova Scotia encourages all community members to visit their local libraries and take part in the broader discussion. If you can’t make it to a reading, join us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or join a book club at your public library.”

The Deception of Livvy Higgs is available to borrow at libraries across the province in paperback and ebook versions. It is also available in accessible formats from the CNIB and National Network for Equitable Library Service.

The book was selected by a committee of librarians and industry professionals in Nova Scotia who used the following criteria:
— written by a living Canadian author
— able to generate discussion and exchange of ideas
— appealing to a broad range of adult readers of varying ages, literacy levels and life experience
— in print and available for purchase in paperback
— strongly written with a compelling story, characters and setting that will generate excitement among readers.

This year’s One Book Nova Scotia reading program includes seven readings across the province.
