Online Toolkit Supports Small Businesses

Nova Scotia small businesses now have a place to learn about online technologies that can help them be more productive and grow.

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson officially launched the e-Business Toolkit today, Oct. 29, to encourage entrepreneurs and startups to become more involved with e-commerce.

“We know there are a lot of Nova Scotia businesses with a handful of employees, or no employees, that just don’t have time to look into all the new tools available today,” said Mr. Samson. “This toolkit simplifies the process and shows business people they can reach customers half a world away, with the click of a mouse.”

Several Nova Scotia businesses are already using the toolkit, including Brook Ridge Farm in Antigonish, which produces and sells wool products.

“I didn’t realize this kind of technology could help a small, farm-based business such as mine, and it’s very exciting,” said owner Rhonda McCarron. “Through the toolkit, I plan to create an even stronger online presence using social media and an online shopping tool.”

The Soap Company of Nova Scotia opened its doors in Sherbrooke in July. It makes natural, handcrafted, small-batch home and personal-care products.

“The e-Business Toolkit provides a great checklist of all the things to consider,” said owner Leigh McFarlane. “It works for both established businesses and startups by identifying gaps and providing possible resources to fill those gaps.”
