On March 22 at 8:47 p.m., Yarmouth Town RCMP responded to a call of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle, a white 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, was stolen from the driveway of a home. The keys had been left in the vehicle.
Police identified a potential suspect and the information was distributed to RCMP officers in the area.
At 9:14 p.m., members of Meteghan RCMP responded to a call on Hwy. 1 in Saulnierville indicating a commercial vehicle had been damaged when it was struck while being passed by a truck. The description of the truck was the same as the stolen truck from Yarmouth. Police checked the area but did not locate the truck.
The information was also relayed to members of Digby RCMP, asking them to watch for the truck. A short time later, the truck was observed travelling on Hwy. 101 between Weymouth and Digby. Police initiated a traffic stop, however the truck fled. RCMP members attempted to pursue the truck but called it off a short time later based on concerns related to the wet road conditions and excessive speed.
The information about the stolen truck was then relayed to Annapolis District RCMP. Police positioned themselves on Hwy. 101 in Lequille, and a short time later, they located the truck and initiated a traffic stop. The RCMP’s Operational Communications Centre was contacted by OnStar, a safety and security technology embedded within GM vehicles, which was able to remotely disable the stolen truck. No one was injured.
Police arrested the driver, who was the person they initially identified as the suspect, without incident. He was taken into custody at 10:10 p.m. and was held in custody until his court appearance today. Tomas Eugene Muise, 21, of Yarmouth has been charged with:
Muise has been remanded and will appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on May 6. The investigation is ongoing.
