Open Forest Day, A Walk In The Park

Hundreds of visitors are expected at Nova Scotia’s second annual Open Forest Day, Saturday, June 25, at Shubie Park in Dartmouth.

“If you like hiking or camping, are curious about nature, make your living in forestry, or might consider operating a woodlot on your land, then stop by Open Forest Day to learn, explore, and enjoy some family fun time,” said Lloyd Hines, Minister of Natural Resources.

Visitors will discover interactive displays along the woodland trails of the park. Children, seniors, and everyone in between can learn about wildlife, biodiversity and the role that natural resources play in the province’s economy, the environment, and people’s health.

There will be face painting, canoe and kayak rentals and other fun activities. Children will receive a Passport to Nature to help explore the event. Everyone will enjoy the All Nations Drumming and the scavenger hunt.

“We are thrilled to be part of this great event to help more people see the wonders of the forest, its value, diversity, and opportunities,” said Jane Barker of the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute.

The Department of Natural Resources and more than 30 organizations are offering Open Forest Day to inform Nova Scotians about developing and maintaining woodlands and the importance of natural resources in the province.

The free event is open to everyone from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Shubie Park is at 54 Locks Rd., along the historic Shubenacadie Canal System.

Lunch will be available to buy from Lemon Dogs at the Fairbanks Centre. Additional parking is available at Dartmouth Crossing, near Cineplex.
