People are invited to celebrate the opening of new facilities at Open Hearth Park in Sydney that offer more to see and do.

To celebrate the new additions, there will be a free, outside concert featuring a variety of Cape Breton talent on Saturday, Aug.

16, near the skating rink on the Sydney Harbour side of Ferry Street.

“Open Hearth Park is building a new and proud history. Everyone is invited to celebrate the beautiful new spaces and features, and enjoy some great local talent,” said Labi Kousoulis, Minister of Internal Services. “The new section will almost double the size of Open Hearth Park and that means more opportunities for everyone to enjoy these spaces.”

The north end of Open Hearth Park now has a skating rink, stage area, walking paths, large lawn areas, and seating. This end of the park spans from the Ferry Street Bridge to the Sydney Harbour.

The north end is also home to a variety of artwork that depicts the heritage of Sydney, steel making and the Mi’kmaq. An area called Steel Henge holds large pieces from the steel mill and other artifacts, including half of a fly wheel and an ingot mould.

Musical acts include:
— children’s entertainer Duncan Wells and The Apple In A Tree Band, 6 p.m.
— singer-songwriter Tess Carrigan, 7 p.m.
— country-folk-bluegrass group Pretty Archie, 7:30 p.m.
— alternative rock power duo The Town Heroes, 8:30 p.m.
— rock ensemble The Tom Fun Orchestra, 9:30 p.m.

Concert goers are encouraged to bring folding lawn chairs. It is a dry event.

Open Hearth Park sits on the former tar ponds and coke ovens site, which the provincial government remediated over the past decade. The park features a football field, playground, skating area, bike and walking trails.
