Over 1100 impaired driving arrests in 2014, Halifax, N.S.

Over 1100 impaired drivers were arrested in 2014 following a year-long effort by RCMP in Nova Scotia focused on impaired driving enforcement.

From January 1st to December 31st, 2014 RCMP charged 1023 people with impaired driving and an additional 84 people were charged for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Impaired by Drug.

RCMP also issued 723 administrative suspensions which is when drivers lose their license from anywhere between 24 hours to 90 days.

The officer-in-charge of Nova Scotia RCMP Traffic Services, Inspector Berni Chapman says that why she is pleased these individuals were apprehended by officers she is disappointed to see the number of impaired drivers remains high.

‘The numbers tell the story: many Nova Scotians are still choosing to get behind the wheel and put their lives and the lives of others at risk,’ says Insp. Chapman.

Thankfully, the RCMP has the help of the public in this effort. Citizens who spot a suspected impaired driver are asked to call 911 and report the location where the vehicle is travelling, description of the driver and/or vehicle, and license plate information. By providing this information it increases the likelihood officers can locate the driver.

The RCMP are asking motorists to take responsibility for their driving decisions and for passengers to be accountable for their decision to drive with someone who is impaired.

Note to media: Insp Chapman will be available for interviews between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
