Overnight snow removal on Halifax Peninsula and downtown streets

Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is asking residents to refrain from parking tonight on select streets on the Halifax Peninsula and downtown area, to assist with overnight snow removal.

Barricades will be placed at the end of the streets where this snow removal work will take place. Traffic will be permitted to travel through but there will be no parking. Tonight crews will focus on removing snow from the following streets:

  • Gottingen Street (Buddy Daye to Cogswell)
  • West Street (Agricola to Maynard)
  • Prince Street (Lower Water to Brunswick)
  • Market Street (Sackville to Blowers)
  • Barrington Street (Duke to South)

Residents are asked to move their vehicles off the street in those areas between 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Feb. 23 and 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24. Residents are reminded that under Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles can be ticketed and towed any time of the day or night if they are obstructing snow clearing.

Snow storage is over-capacity in these areas following 80 cm of snow accumulation last week in the Halifax region. Removing the snow from these areas will help maintain parking in the business districts and ensure emergency vehicles, buses and other traffic can safely access the streets throughout the winter.

Please note the municipal overnight winter parking ban has been lifted until further notice to allow residents to park in areas where crews won’t be undertaking snow clearing operations.
