Owner of 500 block buildings fined for fire code regulations

I reported today for CBC News that Dr. Abdul Yafai, a doctor from Greenwood, has been fined $17,500 for fire code violations on five Spryfield properties. The properties were 532, 534, 536, 538, and 540 Herring Cove Road. These are the large yellow brick apartment buildings by McIntosh Street.

The violations included holes in walls and not having proper inspections for fire alarms/extinguishers. According to city prosecutor Josh Juddah, Dr. Yafai pleaded guilty to the fire code charges, but took more than a year to make the proper repairs to the buildings. The buildings are now in compliance with the fire code. Dr. Yafai had no comment on the case.

I note that last May, #532 Herring Cove Road was closed, and I heard at that time that it was due to fire code violations (I posted a picture on OTC showing boards over the windows and doors).
