Panel Encourages Nova Scotians to Help Shape Future of Education

The Minister’s Panel on Education is inviting all Nova Scotians to be a part of the changes coming for education.

An online survey launched today, April 24, is designed to gather information about whether Nova Scotians believe the education system is meeting the needs of students and what needs to be improved.

“We want everyone, students, parents, educators and community members, to help us shape the future of education in Nova Scotia,” said panel chair Myra Freeman. “It is important that as many people as possible are part of the process in making the changes ahead.”

The online survey is broad in scope. Topics include teaching and learning, curriculum, transitioning after high school, supports for students, equity and human rights, partnerships, school climate and the organization of schools. Respondents can answer every question or only those they chose. They will also be able to tell the panel if they have concerns with the school system and provide suggestions to improve it.

“We recognize that this is a lengthy survey, but it is important that Nova Scotians are able to provide information on a number of different factors that affect student learning,” said Ms. Freeman. “Nova Scotians are passionate about the quality of education their children receive, and this survey will help determine strengths and pressing issues.”

Groups are also encouraged to download the discussion guide to help with ideas and outline issues. The guide was developed to allow groups of students, teachers, parents and guardians, community and business partners, education groups and others to meet as a group to talk about the school system. It provides a series of questions and conversation starters and each section includes facilitator notes, discussion questions and space to record input. Summaries of group discussions can be sent to the panel by e-mail or post.

Nova Scotians can also share ideas and feedback by e-mail at educationreview@gov.ns.ca, phone message at 1-800-424-3777, Twitter at @NSEduReview or mail to Minister’s Panel on Education c/o Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, P.O. Box 578, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2S9.

The survey, discussion guide and submission information are available at www.ednet.ns.ca/educationreview . The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 13.

The Minister’s Panel on Education was named by Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey on Feb. 19 to find out what Nova Scotians think is working and what needs improvement in the education system.
