Paramedics Recognized on Fifth Annual Medic Monday

Today, Sept. 25, is the fifth annual Medic Monday in Nova Scotia. It is a day to celebrate the 1,150 dedicated paramedics who provide highly skilled care to Nova Scotians every day.

“The role of the paramedic has expanded over the years and they continue to broaden their skill set to treat people and save lives in our communities,” said Health and Wellness Minister Randy Delorey. “We’re lucky to have such high-quality professionals caring for our family members, friends and loved ones.”

Paramedics respond to emergencies, provide in-home support for palliative care patients and provide care to seniors in nursing homes through the Extended Care Paramedic Program. They also work in collaborative emergency centres, emergency departments and the Emergency Health Services Medical Communications Centre.

“I am proud to be among such a professional group of paramedics,” said paramedic Rhonda Helpard. “They not only are committed to providing excellent patient care, but dedicated to their communities, as well, volunteering more than 1,600 hours each year.”

The province recognizes the last Monday in September as a day to honour paramedics.
