Partial Street Closures Extended

Monday, April 10, 2017 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents and motorists that parts of Sackville and Granville streets will remain closed until Wednesday night.

Demolition crews are dealing with some unexpected delays in tearing down the old Discovery Centre building, resulting in a requirement to extend the partial street closures for Granville (between Blowers and Sackville streets), and for Sackville (between Barrington and Granville streets).

Work began on the demolition Saturday morning and as is the case with any major project of this size and nature, there can be unforeseen challenges. In this case, crews discovered more rebar material inside the buildings than expected. This has caused delays beyond anyone’s control.

It’s expected both streets will reopen to traffic by Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Demolition work on the Barrington Street side of the buildings has concluded and that portion of the street was reopened to traffic on Sunday evening.

The extended closure on Sackville and Granville streets is required to ensure those in the proximity remain safe.

Local businesses will remain open and all parking garages will be accessible.

Traffic control will be on site throughout the demolition phase of the project to direct traffic and ensure pedestrians remain out of the closed areas.

Marked detours will remain in place for those originally planning to drive along Sackville and Granville streets.

The municipality apologizes for any inconvenience this work and the street closures might cause.
