Perspective

As most of my blog followers know, we have been camping all summer. I always knew we were lucky to be able to do this but today I was reminded of just how lucky we really are to be here, together.

A young boy, Kellen Surette, in a community close to ours has been fighting cancer for the past few months. He spent many months in Toronto and then was moved to Halifax. He seemed to be doing well but then his family received terrible news… unimaginable news. So they brought him home to live what time he has left to the fullest. He is 7 years old.

Heartbreaking. His family has shared their struggles and their happy moments openly and our community and people around the world have embraced Kellen and his family with open arms.

Today, I heard Kellen was granted a wish through the Children’s Wish Foundation. His wish? To go camping with his family. Of all the things in the world, his simple wish is to camp with the ones he loves.

This hit so close to home because we camp all summer and sometimes take it for granted. We have campfires, go to the beach, have deck parties, sing at karaoke and even celebrate Christmas and Halloween at our campground. We are blessed. I AM blessed that I get to spend the summers with the people who are closest to me – my husband and children my parents, my sister and her family and the family we’ve adopted here because we enjoy each others’ company so much.

You can follow Kellen’s wish here at the Children’s Wish Foundation NS Chapter Facebook Page. I encourage you to donate because there are many children who benefit from the programs and services of the Foundation.

So tonight, as I sit around the campfire trading stories and laughs, I’ll think of Kellen and his family and pray for them and appreciate again what we have here at Ben Eoin Beach Campground – a little slice of heaven here on earth. Good luck, Kellen!
