Police charge corporation with breach of Youth Criminal Justice Act
Investigators in the General Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Division have charged CTV News, a division of Bell Media Incorporated, after two young offenders’ faces were broadcast on television on August 24, 2015, in breach of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
On August 25, Halifax Regional Police received a complaint that the faces of two young offenders were shown on television on the CTV News at six the previous evening during a story about a shooting that had occurred on Arklow Drive in Cole Harbour on November 30, 2014. The identities of the youths are protected by a publication ban issued by the courts under the YCJA.
A representative of CTV was scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court this morning to face two counts of breaching a publication ban for protection of privacy of young persons under Section 110(1) of the YCJA.
