Police charge EHS paramedic with criminal negligence and breach of trust

Investigators in the General Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged an Emergency Health Services (EHS) paramedic with criminal negligence and breach of trust in relation to tampered vials of hydromorphone.

On May 9, police received a report from Emergency Health Services that they had identified an issue with their inventory of hydromorphone. Through the investigation, it was determined that a paramedic had removed hydromorphone from vials that were stored in EHS drug vaults at three local hospitals. EHS advised that all potentially affected vials have been removed from circulation and the paramedic has been placed on leave.

On June 21, investigators charged 52-year-old Darrell Bardua of Seaforth with breach of trust, criminal negligence, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on August 15.

The investigation is ongoing.
