Halifax Regional Police has charged a man and woman in connection with two robberies that occurred in Halifax overnight.
Shortly after 3 a.m., police were dispatched to a report of a robbery with a firearm that occurred in the area of Artillery Place in Halifax. The victim was approached by a man demanding his possessions, at that time victims ride arrived and the suspect fled on foot to an awaiting vehicle. The victim was able to provide police with a description of the suspect and a partial plate of the suspect vehicle. No injuries were sustained during the incident, nor did the suspect obtain any property from the victim.
At the same time officers were investigating this incident, police received another call for service was received of a man and woman being sprayed with a sensory irritant in the area of Duke Street and Barrington Street. Based on the investigation into both incidents, officers determined the same man was responsible for both robberies.
A short time later, police located a vehicle matching the description in the west end of Halifax and arrested the two occupants, a man and a woman. Officers determined there was no firearm involved in the first robbery, what the victim described was actually a can of sensory irritant.
In relation to the incident on Artillery Place, police have charged 24-year-old Michael Hope with possession of a weapon knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery and two counts of breach of probation. As well, police have charged 31-year-old Candice Prosper with robbery.
In relation to the incident on Duke Street, Hope faces two counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of breach of probation, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of a weapon knowing its possession is unauthorized. Prosper is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, robbery, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Both Hope and Prosper are scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court this afternoon.
