Police charge two men with fraud
Police have charged two men with a series of frauds that occurred in the region last week.
On June 5 police received a report of a fraud that had occurred at a business on Chain Lake Drive in Halifax. Two men used false identification to obtain a credit card and then used the card to purchase expensive electronic equipment.
On June 7 at approximately 2:30 p.m. police received a report that two men matching the description from the previous incident were attempting to complete a similar transaction at a business on Gottingen Street in Halifax. Responding officers arrested the two men in the business without incident.
Investigators with the Financial Crime Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division determined that the suspects had attempted to complete similar frauds at three other locations throughout Halifax region between June 4 and June 7.
Thirty-six-year-old Constantine Xanthis of Laval Quebec is scheduled to appear today in Halifax Provincial Court to face charges of:
- Fraud over $5,000 contrary to section 380(1)(a) CC
- Fraud under $5,000 contrary to section 380(1)(b) CC
- Conspiracy to commit indictable offence contrary to section 465(1)(c) CC (X2)
Fifty-year-old Frederico Montanaro, of Montreal Quebec is scheduled to appear today in Halifax Provincial Court to face charges of:
- Possession of identity document contrary to section 56.1(1) CC (X6)
- Fraud over $5,000 contrary to section 380(1)(a) CC
- Fraud under $5,000 contrary to section 380(1)(b) CC
- Identity theft contrary to section 402.2(1) CC (X6)
- Personation contrary to section 403(1) (a) CC (X2)
- Conspiracy to commit indictable offence contrary to section 465(1)(c) CC (X2)
