Police continue to investigate murder of Helen Diane Knickle
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the murder of Helen Diane Knickle and homicide investigators in the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the case.
On July 26, 1974, at 2:58 a.m., police responded to a report from a citizen who had found the body of an unresponsive woman on the Halifax North Commons. Upon arrival, officers determined that, 22-year-old Helen was deceased. Her death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation revealed that Helen had left her residence on Cook Street in Halifax to go for a walk by herself between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Investigators believe that there are people who have not yet come forward who have information that could help solve Helen’s murder. They hope that the passage of time may encourage someone to do the right thing and share what they know with police.
It is never too late to come forward and the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation into Helen’s murder. This case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for specified major unsolved crimes. The amount of the award will be based on the investigative value of the information provided.
