Police encourage shoppers to LOCKUP, Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), N.S.

With Christmas only a few weeks away, HRM Partners in Policing would like to remind holiday shoppers to protect their property. Theft from Motor Vehicles is a crime of opportunity and the holiday season creates more opportunities for would-be thieves, particularly around malls and parking lots.

With Christmas only a few weeks away, HRM Partners in Policing would like to remind holiday shoppers to protect their property. Theft from Motor Vehicles is a crime of opportunity and the holiday season creates more opportunities for would-be thieves, particularly around malls and parking lots.

Police suggest using the LOCKUP safety tips to help protect yourself this holiday season.

Lock your car door and leave your most expensive purchases until the end of your shopping trip when you can quickly get in your car and go directly home.

Out of sight out of mind – keep purchases out of sight. Place packages in the trunk or under the seat.

Check your vehicle before shopping. Is there anything to create an opportunity for theft. Then condense any purchases into one or two bags to create the illusion of fewer purchases.

Keep moving. If you run out to your car to drop off packages while shopping, make sure you put them in the trunk and then move your car to a new location before heading back into the mall.

Understand that thieves may be observing. Utilize security precautions and safety tips.

Park in well- lit places, plan ahead and be prepared. This will go along way to ensure you and your holiday purchase stay safe.

HRM Partners in Policing hope everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday.
