Police have charged a man with putting animals in distress in relation to an incident that occurred  in Dartmouth.

At approximately 1 p.m. officers were called for a report of animals in distress in the Costco parking lot, located at 137 Countryview Drive in Dartmouth.

Police located two small dogs locked inside a vehicle that were in distress due to the high temperature inside the vehicle and lack of water. The dogs were removed from the vehicle and cared for until the owner could be located.

The owner of the vehicle was charged under the Animal Protection Act.

On a sunny day, even with the windows open, a parked vehicle quickly becomes like a furnace and presents potentially fatal conditions for pets left inside. If you see a pet in immediate distress, call 9-1-1 and take directions from the call taker.
