HRM Partners in Policing are warning citizens about a scam that has been identified in our area.
Over the last month, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit has received five complaints from citizens who have been contacted by a representative from a directory publisher whose name and logo is very similar to the Yellow Pages Group. So far there are no cases of anyone losing money in our area, however, in other areas, people who bought an advertisement later received a bill and discovered it was not for the Yellow Pages.
Citizens are reminded to ensure they know whom they are speaking with before entering into any agreement and read the fine print of any contract before signing it. If contacted in person, ask to see the representative’s business card and a copy of their publication. Verify which company the person represents and check with the Better Business Bureau and the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies to confirm the company is legitimate. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their product, distribution and circulation to ensure you are getting exactly what you think you are ordering. If you receive a suspicious bill, make sure you check it carefully and compare it to your contract to ensure it’s for advertising you have ordered.
