Police issue reminder to motorists

HRM Partners in Policing would like to remind motorists to adjust their driving habits, especially their speed, based on the changing weather conditions.

With the heavy rain we are currently experiencing, motorists are asked to slow down. Speed, in conjunction with water on the road, can result in a vehicle hydroplaning. This occurs when a layer of water forms between the tires and the roadway causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

If you find yourself hydroplaning, take your foot off the gas pedal, disengage the cruise control if using it and let your vehicle slow down until the tires make contact with the road surface.

In addition to the heavy rain, temperatures are expected to drop overnight which could result in the roads becoming slippery. If the driving conditions deteriorate, allow extra time for your commute so you don’t feel you have to rush. A vehicles’ stopping distance increases when it’s slippery so allow extra space between you and the vehicle ahead. When approaching a red light or stop sign, begin stopping earlier to help prevent sliding into the intersection.

Visibility may also be an issue. Motorists are asked to watch out for pedestrians attempting to cross the street. Pedestrians are reminded to use crosswalks, look both ways before crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a stop before entering into the roadway.

HRM Partners in Policing thank motorists and pedestrians for doing their part to help keep our roads safe.
