The HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit has received a few calls from citizens who believe they were contacted by someone fraudulently soliciting money.
The caller claims to represent the “IWK Cancer Unit” and asks for a donation. Police have confirmed with the IWK that no such fundraising is taking place. Fortunately, the citizens who contacted police about this scam did not donate any money.
Residents are reminded to be cautious when dealing with in-person and phone solicitations.
Never provide personal information or credit card numbers to anyone unless you have initiated the contact, or are sure you know who you are dealing with.
If you have any doubt as to the legitimacy of the organization, ask for a phone number to call or for printed information to be sent to you.
