Police issue warning to businesses

Halifax Regional Police would like businesses who use point-of-sale pin pads to be aware of a possible scam.

The Halifax Regional Police/RCMP Financial Crime Unit is investigating complaints from local businesses concerning suspicious calls they have received from someone claiming to represent the vendor of their pin pads.

The caller says they are looking into problems with the pin pad and asks about the type of system being used. These calls are not legitimate and there is a concern that the business is being set up for a future fraud.

Calls for pin pad service should be generated by the business and not solicited by the vendor. When in doubt, police suggest businesses obtain contact information from a caller and phone their vendor directly to confirm the person actually represents them.

Businesses who have received suspicious phone calls regarding pin pads are asked to contact police at 490-1985.
