Police looking for man after hate-motivated threats, urinating on mosque

RCMP release:

Antigonish County District RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man in connection with threats and mischief in Antigonish.

On July 24, 2024, Antigonish County District RCMP received a report of hate-motivated threats made the previous day at a park in Antigonish. Officers learned that a man was filming a group of women and children with a mobile device and that a woman in the group had asked him to stop filming them. He then allegedly made threats and comments about the perceived race and culture of the group. He left the area on foot and did not attempt to follow through on his threats.

On July 28, police received a report that a man was seen around 9:30 a.m. leaving trash and urinating at the entrance to a mosque in Antigonish.

Based on witness statements, photos and video footage from a surveillance camera, police believe the same man was involved in both incidents.

The man is believed to be in his 50s or 60s. He is thin and has gray hair. During the July 24 incident, he was wearing gray sweatpants, a T-shirt, a cap and blue sneakers. During the July 28 incident, he was wearing dark sunglasses, jeans and a sweater with blue and white stripes, and he was carrying a green reusable shopping bag.

Based on the nature of the comments and actions at the mosque, investigators believe both incidents were motivated by hate. The RCMP takes hate crimes very seriously and condemns these types of incidents. The investigation is ongoing.
