Police make arrest in Cole Harbour robbery, several more charges laid

Police have arrested a man in relation to the robbery that occurred in Cole Harbour last week, and have laid several more charges.

On July 6, a man entered a home in Cole Harbour, sprayed the homeowner with ‘bear spray’, threatened to stab him and stole money. The suspect was known to the victim. Police have been looking for the suspect in this incident ever since.

Last evening just after 4 p.m., police officers on patrol in Dartmouth noted a vehicle that was believed to be stolen, and officers also noticed that the driver of the stolen vehicle was the man who was suspected in the July 6 robbery. Police attempted a traffic stop, and the vehicle quickly left the area. Police followed the vehicle through the busy parking lot of a business in Dartmouth Crossing, where the man got out of the vehicle, and ran into a wooded area.

A 35-year-old Dartmouth woman who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle was arrested without incident. She was released last evening and will be appearing in Dartmouth Provincial Court on August 16, 2016, on charges of Possession of Stolen Property over $5000.

Police officers from Halifax Regional Police Patrol Division and East Quick Response Unit, assisted by a K-9 unit from Halifax Regional Police, arrested the man after a short time without incident. He was held in custody overnight and will be appearing in Dartmouth Provincial Court later today. While being transported to the courthouse, the man escaped from custody for a brief period but was again apprehended by officers.

Twenty-four-year-old Jason William Buckler Benn of Dartmouth has been charged with the following offences:

  • Robbery
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Breach of Probation
  • Breach of Recognizance
  • Uttering Threats

  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous Driving
  • Resist Arrest
