At approximately 5:55 pm Halifax Regional Police attended Hwy 118 at Exit 12 which is the off ramp from Akerley Blvd, in relation to a motor vehicle collision. A dark colored car, driven by a 38 year old woman along with two passengers; a 66 year old woman and a 8 month old child, was travelling inbound on Hwy 118 passing exit 12. Witnesses provided information about a red SUV with a 23 year old man and a 25 year old man, that had been travelling at a high rate of speed, inbound on HWY 118 and swerving across both lanes. The SUV struck the car, sending the car into the ditch on the side of the road. The driver of the SUV stopped at the scene, the occupants switched spots in the vehicle before driving off again inbound. An HRP member was travelling inbound near Dartmouth Crossing when he noticed the SUV leaving from a stop on the side of the road, the SUV was subsequently stopped a short distance further inbound on Hwy 118. As information was received from witnesses that both men had been driving and observations of the HRP members, both men from the SUV were arrested for impaired driving. The three passengers from the dark colored car were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The child has since been assessed and released from the IWK Hospital and both women are still receiving treatment at hospital. Highway 118 was reduced to one lane as members of HRP patrol, Accident Investigation and Forensic Identification Section conducted the investigation for several hours, however, we anticipate the Hwy to be fully reopened shortly after midnight.
