Police remind citizens about home safety

HRM Partners in Policing remind citizens to take steps to reduce the risk of break and enters into their homes.

With the long weekend and summer quickly approaching, people will be traveling and leaving their homes unattended.

Warmer weather also leads to people leaving windows open. Both situations create opportunities for would-be criminals.

To help reduce the risk, we offer the following crime prevention tips for citizens when they go away:

-Have mail and newspapers collected.
-Arrange to have grass cut.
-Consider leaving indoor lights on or using timers inside.
-Ensure your property is well lit.
-Notify close neighbours to keep an eye on your property.
-Close your windows whenever you are not at home.
-Ensure patio doors and low level windows are locked and secure.
-Keep your garages/shed locked.

Citizens are also encouraged to contact police to report any suspicious activity.
