Doing business in Port Hawkesbury will look different and more attractive with a new plan to improve tourism and grow the economy.

“Like many rural towns in Nova Scotia, the people of Port Hawkesbury want to see their community prosper,” said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson.

“They’ve shown a commitment to development and are ready to work together to put their plan into action, and government is happy to encourage and support such a future-focused initiative.”

The plan, funded by the province, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Town of Port Hawkesbury and the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, will see Reeves Street redesigned and refreshed. Once complete, it is expected to provide the area with a vision for development for the next 25 years.

“The government recognizes that vibrant and sustainable communities require solid infrastructure,” said Rob Moore, Minister of State, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. “Our investment will support the development of a conceptual plan to revitalize the business district in Port Hawkesbury, which will assist the community in its efforts to generate new opportunities and provide economic benefits for the entire Strait area.”

A consultant will prepare the proposal and do the preliminary work for the conceptual design.

“This plan will help us identify opportunities for tourism, waterfront development and new recreational activities, as well as address the potential for residential and commercial expansion,” said Billy Joe MacLean, mayor of Port Hawkesbury. “All of these things will have a tremendous impact on our community’s economy and we’re very appreciative of government’s support.”

The project will be led by the Reeves Street Business Development Committee, the town and the chamber.

“We’re very pleased that government recognized that the design and look of our hub community is an integral part of a wider regional marketing effort,” said Adam Rodgers, president of the chamber. “This initiative is an important collaboration between the town and our chamber, and we’re confident it will have a real economic impact for the Strait area.”

The provincial government will contribute $20,000 towards the $55,000 plan.

Provincial funding for this project comes from the Regional Economic Development Program. For more information, visit www.novascotia.ca/econ .
