Premier Stephen McNeil offered congratulations today, Aug. 22, to the Olympians who represented Nova Scotia at the Olympics in Rio do Janeiro, Brazil, over the last two weeks.
“On the water and in the water, in the gymnastics arena and on the marathon route, our Olympic athletes made us proud with their effort and achievement,” said Premier McNeil.
On the last day of the games, Sunday, Aug. 21, Antigonish native Eric Gillis finished 10th in the men’s marathon, the best result for a Canadian man since 1976.
Earlier in the games, Halifax gymnast Ellie Black made Canadian Olympic history, finishing fifth in the all-around competition in women’s artistic gymnastics.
Other Nova Scotians also had top 10 results, including paddlers Mark de Jonge, Genevieve Orton, and Ryan Cochrane. Swimmer Sydney Pickrem, whose parents are from Nova Scotia, also had a top 10 finish.
Sailors Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd, and brothers Graeme and Jacob Saunders rounded out the Nova Scotia contingent on the Canadian Olympic team.
“Congratulations to all of the athletes on their dedication, perseverance and excellence,” said Premier McNeil.
