Premier, Nova Scotia Student Open Toronto Stock Exchange

For the first time, Canada’s largest stock exchanges have opened from Nova Scotia, and Vanessa Ferguson had the honour of initiating the trading day.

“My heart is in Nova Scotia and as long as we continue to be innovative and work together, I’m confident business in this province will thrive,” said Ms. Ferguson.

The 23-year-old Nova Scotia Community College student was selected to join Premier Stephen McNeil for the opening ceremony.

“I’ve met so many creative and talented individuals, we’re really a hub for fresh ideas,” said Ms. Ferguson. “Nova Scotians are great supporters of local businesses because we like to see each other succeed, and it’s our sense of community that fosters success.”

“Enthusiastic young people like Vanessa are changing the culture of our province, they’re taking a new path towards success and inspiring others to follow their lead,” said Premier McNeil. “This is only part of what makes Nova Scotia a great place to do business, and I applaud their pursuit of a better future for the province.

“We will continue to do our part by eliminating unnecessary and out of date regulations, making it easier to access capital, building on our natural competitive advantages and finding ways to make it easier and faster to interact with government.”

Twenty-eight Nova Scotia businesses are listed on Toronto Stock Exchange or TSX Venture Exchange. Collectively these businesses represent about $28.6 billion in market value.

“We are delighted to connect with innovative entrepreneurs across Canada to help them scale up and grow into the newest and next wave of exciting Canadian companies,” said Nick Thadaney, president and CEO, Global Equity Capital Markets, TMX Group.

Ms. Ferguson will graduate this summer, and wants to help a Nova Scotia business find success.

“We’re so proud of Vanessa,” said NSCC president Don Bureaux. “The college works to instill in our students the essential qualities the next generation of business leaders will need by inspiring an entrepreneurial spirit, promoting innovation and encouraging them to use their talents and skills to find their own niche. Vanessa is a shining example.”

TSX held the market open ceremony in Nova Scotia to celebrate innovation and entrepreneurialism in the province.
