Premier Stephen McNeil announced today, Dec. 3, the retirement of David Darrow as the deputy minister to the premier, and clerk of the Executive Council. The premier also announced the appointment of Catherine Blewett as his replacement.
Mr. Darrow is retiring after 33 years of service with the province, during which he oversaw the development of a remediation plan for the Sydney tar ponds and coke ovens sites as CEO of the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency. He also served as deputy minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (2005-2011) and deputy minister to the premier, clerk of Executive Council and head of the Public Service (2011-2014).
“David’s contributions to the province and the people of Nova Scotia cannot be understated,” said Premier McNeil. “Personally, I couldn’t have asked for a better deputy and clerk upon becoming premier. David is sincere, honest, hard-working and he believes deeply in the public service. I thank him for his guidance and I wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Ms. Blewett currently serves as deputy minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and CEO of the Office of Immigration. She has 24 years of experience with the public service, both at the provincial and federal levels.
“Catherine brings a wealth of knowledge to this position,” said the premier. “She has worked on a variety of key files with my office and I have the utmost confidence in her abilities. She is a strong leader and she cares deeply about the future of our province and having a strong, engaged public service.”
Mr. Darrow’s retirement is effective Dec. 31.
Ms. Blewett’s appointment becomes effective Jan. 1.
