Program Teaches Camping Basics

Nova Scotians wanting to learn camping basics and experience the excitement of exploring a provincial park are invited to apply for the Learn 2 Camp program.

The program teaches camping essentials like how to build a fire, cook a meal, set up a tent, and choose and use equipment. They can also enjoy activities like geocaching or guided nature hikes.

The weekend program takes place at Dollar Lake Provincial Park, July 21 and 22 and includes a night of camping.

Learn 2 Camp is delivered in partnership with Scouts Canada.

“Youth in Scouting have fun discovering new things and sharing new experiences. Scouters have the training to help youth and adults enjoy the wonders of camping in our beautiful Nova Scotia provincial parks,” said Ian MacDonald, club leader of the Wolfville Scouts Club.

“Scouters love to teach and pass on their experiences to others so it is a natural partnership: Scouters want to share the joys of camping and Nova Scotians want to learn to camp.”

The program is open to everyone.

“This is our second year partnering with the province on Learn 2 Camp. Our participants have never been camping in a provincial park before, so to have the opportunity to learn how to camp without having to purchase the equipment is fantastic,” said Lani Poce, community connections coordinator at Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia.

“It’s one of our most popular events. The families love to get out of the city and spend time connecting with nature and with other Canadian families.”

Applications are being accepted until July 13.
