Province Commits to Funding Psychology Interns

The Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK will continue with the psychology intern program for next year.

The program provides hands-on clinical training for PhD students. The health authority and IWK are funding the program this year and the province will fund the program next year.

“We value the work of the interns and we value this program,” said Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. “The intern program is important for recruiting and retaining psychologists in Nova Scotia, and they help support mental health care in our province.

“Contrary to media reports, the program was never cut and it will continue. This has always been our intention.”

The Department of Health and Wellness will provide $223,000 to hire eight interns, six at the Nova Scotia Health Authority and two at the IWK.

The health authority, IWK and province will discuss long-term funding during the upcoming budget process.
