The Province of Nova Scotia has renewed its memorandum of understanding with Highland Council, Scotland, originally signed in 2002.
The memorandum has helped both parties explore their shared Gaelic language, cultural origins, history and emigration, through many exchanges, cultural and educational initiatives, and official visits. The memorandum is named Ach an Cuan – But for the Sea, which expresses a sense of connection felt on both sides of the Atlantic.
“This memorandum reaffirms connections with the Highland Council,” said Minister of Gaelic Affairs Randy Delorey. “It ensures we will continue to seek opportunities to strengthen and support the contributions Gaels, through their language and culture, make to the social and economic life of our province.”
Facilitated by Nova Scotia’s Gaelic Affairs division and the Highland Council’s Gaelic Team, the memorandum is designed to assist Nova Scotians and residents of Highland Council in accessing resources that may support initiatives specific to both regions. An official event to recognize the renewal of the memorandum was held last month at the annual cultural festival, the Royal National Mòd, in Inverness, Scotland.
“A lot of groundbreaking work has been done to foster opportunities and to share the promoting of the Gaelic language as well as strengthening our cultural, economic development and tourism links.” said Councillor Jimmy Gray, convener of the Highland Council. “I am delighted this solid partnership will be renewed and I look forward to seeing ties strengthened even more over the coming years.”
