The Lunenburg Yacht Club will be able to expand its facilities and host world-class sailing events thanks to a $150,000 investment from the province.
“We’re proud to invest in the Lunenburg Yacht Club,” said MLA Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, on behalf of Tony Ince, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. “With these upgrades, the yacht club will be able to bring together sailors from across the country, and from around the world. This will play a significant role in strengthening our community.”
The funding will allow the yacht club to build a launch ramp and a crane for moving boats in and out of the water. These improvements will allow the club to host high-profile sailing events, such as the International Sonar Class World Championships and Sail Canada’s Women’s Keelboat Championship.
“This investment will allow our club to begin much-needed infrastructure improvements that will bring significant benefits to our community,” said Michael O’Connor, commodore, Lunenburg Yacht Club. “Once completed, the club will be able to host world-class sailing events that will benefit local tourism operators and other businesses.”
The Lunenburg Yacht Club, on Herman’s Island in Mahone Bay, has water-based facilities for yacht racers and family-oriented activities. The yacht club also offers sailing lessons and a rowing program. For more information about the Lunenburg Yacht Club, visit www.lyc.ca.
Investment in community and cultural organizations is a vital part of the province’s recently unveiled culture strategy, Nova Scotia’s Culture Action Plan. The full plan is online at novascotia.ca/culture.
