Province to Repair or Buy 18 Flood Damaged Homes

The 18 homeowners most impacted by Thanksgiving Day floods will now be able to make decisions on the future of their homes.

The province is providing compensation information to homeowners so they can decide whether to repair their homes or sell them to the province.

The province’s Emergency Management Office will begin meeting with individual homeowners today, Dec. 8, to share assessments, test results and other information to help them make decisions about their homes.

“I know it’s been a difficult time and I want to thank people for their patience,” said Zach Churchill, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office. “We will start meeting with these residents to share the information they need to make important decisions about the future of their homes.”

Homeowners will receive:
— appraised market value assessment information (pre-flood value)
— the amount available to bring the home to pre-flood condition
— home content coverage available through disaster financial assistance
— test results for oil contamination.

Homes purchased by the province will be demolished and any contaminants will be remediated to appropriate environmental standards.

Homeowners who have had to leave their homes because of flood damage will continue to receive financial support for accommodations from the province until their claims are complete and they are resettled.

To date the Emergency Management Office has received approximately 670 Disaster Financial Assistance claim applications.
