Provincial Hatcheries Host Open Houses

Nova Scotians will be able to visit the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture’s three fish hatcheries, all of which have updated their visitor interpretation centres over the winter.

“Nova Scotians love to fish.

Angling is one of our most popular outdoor activities,” said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell. “Our hatcheries play an important role in ensuring our recreational fishery is sustainable.”

The open houses will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.

Saturday’s open houses will be at McGowan Lake Fish Hatchery, 43 McGowan Lake Rd., Westfield, Queens Co., and Margaree Fish Hatchery, 115 Hatchery Rd., Margaree Valley, Inverness Co.

Sunday’s open house will be at Fraser’s Mills Fish Hatchery, RR No. 3, St. Andrews, Antigonish Co.

In addition to viewing thousands of fish, visitors can tour the interpretation centres which feature exhibits on hatchery operations, stocking programs, fisheries management and the history of hatcheries in Nova Scotia.

Fisheries staff will be on hand to speak with visitors and provide information about the hatcheries.
