Provincial: Police investigate stolen device, caution public safety

Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating the theft of a Troxler Density Gauge, a device that uses a nuclear source to measure soil and asphalt density. Because the piece of equipment contains radioactive material, it could pose a risk of radiation exposure if tampered with.
The gauge is equipped with a padlock on the handle and should remain locked until returned to qualified personnel. If found, police caution citizens not to handle this device; report the location to police at 563-5151 or the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission at 613-995-0479 or online at www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca.
The density gauge was reported stolen to police when its owner noticed it missing from the back of his truck. It’s believed the item was taken sometime during the overnight hours of Sunday, November 11, 2012. The device is yellow in colour, and approximately 24” long with an “L” shape handle connected to a 10”x10” instrument gauge. The stolen Troxler Density Gauge can be identified by model number 3440 and serial number 24470, located on the end of the handle and the base of the gauge.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of this device is asked to contact police at 563-5151 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
