Nova Scotians are reminded this is the final week for an online survey which will help shape the province’s first Sexual Violence Strategy. The survey ends Friday, July 18.

“I want to thank all Nova Scotians who have taken the time over the past five weeks to share their ideas and suggestions with us,” said Community Services Minister Joanne Bernard.

“Even if you have never been personally impacted by sexual violence, this is an issue that touches us as parents, employers, educators, business owners, neighbours, citizens, taxpayers.

“We all want a safe, caring and respectful society for our children, families, employees and friends. So I urge all Nova Scotians to take a few moments over the next few days to help shape this important piece of public policy.”

The government is encouraging all Nova Scotians who want to make a positive change or have been impacted by sexual violence to participate. This includes victims, survivors, family members of victims and survivors, those concerned about crime, educators, employers, health-care professionals, advocates, community members and concerned citizens.

The online feedback form is available at http://novascotia.ca/coms/svs/your-feedback/ . The form can be completed online and submitted electronically, or can be printed and returned by mail. Feedback is anonymous.

“A comprehensive strategy must reflect the voices of our communities in all their diversity,” said Rene Ross, who is developing the strategy. “Ending sexual violence is a shared responsibility that will require the efforts of all Nova Scotians. This is an opportunity for our province to become a leader in the prevention of sexual violence, and to shape a plan of action that is rooted in the realities of those most impacted.

“It is essential that we hear from as many people as possible to ensure future generations are free from the threat, fear, and harm of sexual violence.”

The three-year provincial strategy, which will receive $2 million in funding per year, will focus on sexual violence prevention and improving services for victims.
