Public Invited to Share Ideas to Develop Bedford Waterfront

The community is invited to help shape the future of the Bedford waterfront from April 30 to May 3.

Waterfront Development Corporation is hosting four days of community sessions, which include a drop-in open house over three days, with site tours, formal presentations and a participatory design workshop.

Waterfront Development, with Halifax Regional Municipality, held extensive public consultations in 2010 to develop a plan. Over the past few years, the community has shared a variety of new ideas and Waterfront Development has reconsidered the plan to include new concepts for the project.

A new vision for the Mill Cove waterfront area will be shared, allowing people to review the concept, provide input and shape the plan to develop the waterfront.

“The concepts we will be sharing include a mix of public amenities, natural areas, residential uses, restaurant and retail clusters,” said Colin MacLean, president and CEO, Waterfront Development. “High-quality, sustainable public spaces remain the driver of our plans. It is critical for us to engage the community to ensure we create a place that is a source of pride for residents.”

Development projects in Bedford are on hold for up to two years while HRM conducts additional studies. Waterfront Development is using the time to consult with the community to refine the concept and do technical studies on how to implement it.

“We’ve harmonized the community’s concerns and aspirations into a new neighbourhood concept for the area,” said Andy Fillmore, vice-president of planning and development with Waterfront Development. “It’s a plan that could be built on the footprint of the existing infill, preserving natural areas on and near the site. Only minor additional infill will be required to complete and stabilize the edges of the footprint.”

The four days of community sessions will be held in a store front in Sunnyside Mall, 1595 Bedford Hwy. Walking tours will be on the Bedford waterfront. Everyone is welcome and an event schedule is available at www.my-waterfront.ca.

Feedback can also be shared online and through Twitter, using the hashtag #ShapeMyWaterfront. Results will be shared in May and June.

Waterfront Development is a provincial Crown corporation developing the strategic potential of waterfronts in Bedford, Dartmouth, Halifax and Lunenburg. It fosters waterfronts that drive economic opportunity, enhance tourism, provide memorable public spaces, and reflect and protect marine heritage.
