NSGEU: Rally in Support of Mental Health Workers
Management at NSHA recently advised they would be eliminating 14 mental health positions at Emerald Hall.
These LPNs and Developmental Workers work in a very challenging area of the health care system. On this in-patient psychiatric unit, workers help treat clients with dual diagnoses of intellectual disabilities & mental illness.
“The employer can’t explain how laying off these workers is going to help clients,” said NSGEU President Jason MacLean, “It seems like they’re doing this just to try and save money.”
These clients and their families require stability and the expertise of these experienced staff. Our mental health care system is in crisis: we cannot afford to lose these workers.
President MacLean was at the rally along with members of the NSGEU Board of Directors and affected members.
The noon time rally took place in front of the Nova Scotia Hospital (300 Pleasant Street)
