RCMP asking public to watch for illegal smuggling

As the summer weather approaches, RCMP are asking Nova Scotian’s to be ever vigilant of suspicious and irregular behavior along the coasts and around remote air strips.

Nova Scotia is constantly targeted by drug and human smugglers as well as other organized crime groups due to the remote and isolated coastline. The people who live, work and play in those areas know better than anyone when something is not normal or out of character. Here is what to watch for on the water:

– Boats operating without proper lights / markings
– Boats of foreign registry in very remote or secluded areas
– Vessels purposely avoiding other vessels by changing direction
– Smaller vessels hovering in the area of a much larger vessel
– Boats operating at odd times, not consistent with fishing schedules or other normal activities

Here are some tips for around the remote air strips:

– Aircraft landing after hours / not using proper lighting
– Aircraft with covered windows or not displaying proper registration (“CF” & “CG” Canadian / “N” indicates U.S.)

RCMP encourage citizens to report all suspicious activity to your local Detachment or call 1-800-803-7267. Everyone has a role to play in keeping our province safe.
