RCMP asks you to make the right choice ‘How are you getting home over the holidays?’, Halifax, N.S.

What should I make? Do I bring a gift? What should I wear? Who is going? Many Nova Scotians are asking these questions as they attend holiday parties but the real questions to ask ourselves are, ‘How am I getting there?’ and ‘How am I getting home?’

The RCMP reminds Nova Scotians to plan ahead for a safe and sober drive this holiday season.

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of death on Nova Scotia’s roadways.

‘I never want anyone to have to go through the loss that my family experienced,’ said Inspector Ray Oliver whose sister died as the result of an impaired driver. ‘It is devastating to think that because someone chose to get behind the wheel after drinking, my sister died.’

As part of National Safe Driving Week the RCMP is conducting a coordinated impaired driving enforcement campaign across the country and have designated this Saturday, December 7, 2013, as National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. As Nova Scotia’s Provincial Police, the RCMP will have a strong presence on our roadways checking to see if motorists are driving in a safe and sober manner.

In support of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson will be gearing-up in duty equipment and working alongside members at check points in Sackville and Windsor, Nova Scotia.*

‘I look forward to getting out there and speaking to Nova Scotians about planning ahead and making the right choice before getting behind the wheel,’ says RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson. ‘By setting-up random checkpoints our members are able to investigate the possibility that a driver may be impaired by alcohol or drugs. We also use the opportunity to remind motorists that everyone has the right to come home safe.’

As the Provincial Police, the RCMP will continue to have a strong presence on Nova Scotia’s roadways to stop alcohol and drug impaired drivers. Road Safety is a priority for the RCMP this holiday season and all year long.
