RCMP charge man for impaired driving by drug, Amherst, N.S.

Cumberland County RCMP have charged a male with impaired driving by drug following a vehicle stop for speeding.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. yesterday, a member of the RCMP driving an unmarked police vehicle on Highway 104 westbound noted a green Camaro pass by at a high rate of speed.

The Camaro was followed and noted to be traveling at speeds of approximately 150 km/h. The vehicle was passing other vehicles and was swerving back and forth, sometimes hitting the shoulder of the road.

A traffic stop was coordinated with marked units near Exit 1. Officers noted a clear odor of cannabis in the vehicle. The driver, a 50-year-old male from the Digby area, was arrested on scene and is facing charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Driving while his Ability to Operate a Motor Vehicle was Impaired by Drugs. The two passengers in the car were also arrested and later released without charge.

The investigation is continuing.
