RCMP charge man in historical sexual assault

Yarmouth Town RCMP has charged a man in a sexual assault that occurred 20 years ago in Yarmouth.

On June 20, 2022, Yarmouth Town RCMP received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred between the fall of 2001 and the summer of 2002 in Yarmouth when the victim was 14-years-old. The investigation was assisted by the RCMP/HRP Sexual Assault Investigation Team.

On July 26, Yarmouth Town RCMP arrested Mark Alexander Thornton, 51, of Yarmouth. Thornton has been charged with Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Assault. He was later released on conditions and will appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on October 11, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

Yarmouth Town RCMP believe that there may be additional victims and is reaching out to offer support and encourage anyone who may have been a victim to come forward by contacting your local police or RCMP Detachment. Police want victims to know that they can contact them and discuss an incident before making a decision to further participate in the investigation and court process.
