East Hants District RCMP would like to alert the public about a recent e-transfer scam.
On November 26, a home seller was contacted by email from what appeared to be their home realtor requesting an e-transfer to be held in trust pending a home inspection.
Only after the e-transfer was accepted, the home owner contacted their real-estate agent and learned that they had not requested a deposit. The investigation determined that the real-estate agent’s email had been hacked.
The investigation is continuing.
The RCMP suggests as a preventive measure, verify with your real-estate agent before transferring any funds. For more information, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) by phone at 1-888-495-8501 (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time) or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca. If you or a family member has fallen victim to this fraud, please report to your local police service, as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).
