Despite slippery winter road conditions yesterday morning, one driver was in a hurry exceeding the posted speed limit by 126 km/h.
Yesterday at 5:30 a.m., RCMP Eastern Traffic Services were conducting traffic enforcement on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Telford area when an officer observed a vehicle traveling at an extreme rate of speed.
The vehicle was locked on radar at 226 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone. Road conditions at the time were consistent with winter driving: slippery patches and in some cases, patches of snow due to flurries in the area.
‘These are speeds for a controlled race track not for a 100-series highway., ‘ says Cpl. Mark Kellock. ‘This could have easily resulted in a fatal collision given the high rate of speed the vehicle was traveling and the changing winter road conditions.’
The 28-year-old Sydney man was driving a Chevrolet Malibu. He was charged with Stunting and his rental vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. He received an automatic seven-day license suspension and if convicted faces a fine of $2418.95.
The investigation is continuing.
