RCMP Stetsons and Spurs youth celebrate year end, Cole Harbour, N.S.

The RCMP Stetsons and Spurs youth groups from Cole Harbour and Preston will be holding their annual drill display at Cole Harbour Place.

Stetsons and Spurs is made up of youth ages 12-18 that are interested in learning about policing in their community.

Stetsons and Spurs program helps youth develop leadership, public speaking and conflict resolution skills.

The program objective looks to engage youth in opportunities to assist their local communities while helping to make them a safe place to live. The youth achieve this through participation in Operation Hawkeye (placement of flyers reminding motorists to keep vehicle doors locked and valuables out of sight), marching in parades, participation in community events and learn about becoming a police officer in the RCMP. This past April, members in this program attended the annual Police Youth Camp, along with youth from other police agencies. The focus was on Leadership, and the youth had opportunity to participate in several outdoor team building activities.

The youth receive instruction in Drill, Deportment and basic physical training.Tonight they will showcase their marching skills at 6:00 p.m., as they celebrate another end to a successful year. Also in attendance this evening is special guest, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant.

Media are welcome to attend the event.
